This is the original, From this 1886 card of ARTHUR WHARTON, the world's 1st-ever soccer card, made by JOHN BAINES of Bradford, the similar card of Wharton by Briggs of Leeds was pirated. Not only the first soccer player ever to feature on a sports card, the Darlington FC goalkeeper was, in summer 1886, the World Record-breaking Fastest Man on earth, at 10 seconds for the 100yards sprint. IMAGES: the 2nd image shows the Briggs copy, also from 1886, on the cover of Antiques Trade Gazette. The price was £33,000 (hammer £26,800+commissions+tax=GBP£33,000 gross price paid, in early 2024).
